Pinellas County, FL. In an era of arts education cuts, Pinellas is enjoying more funding. Jeanne Reynolds and Ray Smenner will talk about building the strong coalition of local arts folks, community leaders, school administrators, and teachers it takes to put down roots for arts education. Avoid their pitfalls and replicate their success with step-by-steps and examples.

Carol Sue Fromboluti will talk about how to receive an arts education grant from the U.S. Department of Education (USDE), Elaine Mariolle about innovative partnerships and economic development, and Jan Spencer de Gutierrez about collaboration across school departments, schools, and communities. They’ll discuss how they earned, spent, and succeeded with USDE support.

3:15 p.m. A Case Study in a Statewide Department of Public Instruction Arts Education Task Force
Panelists will share arts education initiatives currently underway, as well as those projected for the future in Wisconsin. This panel will feature Elizabeth Burmaster, Wisconsin's elected State Superintendent of Public Instruction. In addition to her work in Wisconsin, Superintendent Burmaster will share her priorities as she becomes the president of the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and her insights as chairperson of CCSSO's Task Force examining the reauthorization of "No Child Left Behind."

Roger Dearing has been an arts education champion for decades, as a school leader, as a volunteer, and as a musician. He’ll tell us how to make arts education a long-term priority for your schools.

Rebecca Borden will outline the new, best-selling research on integrated arts education, Third Space. After years of full-scale arts integration, these schools show improvement in just about every area. At this research 101 primer, we’ll leverage this and other research for your best programs and best messages.

Praxis: Building Teaching Artists
Teaching artists have become de rigueur in arts education partnerships, gaining national attention for their expertise and recognition of teaching artist field. This workshop will build the capacity of arts organizations to bring art to kids by building the capacity of teaching artists. Creative systems that provide professional development, respect, and sustained support to embed teaching artists into the public school system and tap our students' creative energy.

Kristine Cohn is the Department of Education's spokesperson for Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and she’ll talk about the arts improving achievement in other subjects and remaining core to No Child Left Behind, and what this means for teachers—everything you need to know for educated, lasting public school partnerships.

1:30 p.m. Building Better from the Inside Out
Keynote and guest speakers Kristine Cohn and Roger Dearing will host a conversation about public education and the arts: what works, what’s needed, and where the opportunities are. Take your site-specific questions to their table for problem solving, encouragement, and inspiration.

Our keynote speakers and others will frame some last-minute ideas from the past couple of days and provide a frame for reflection and to pull from the audience the actions they'll identify during the preconference to affect policy and practice for the long-term good of arts education.
