Opening Event: Discover Downtown Las Vegas
Friday, June 1, 2007
7:00 p.m.–10:00 p.m.
Begin your evening at the Clark County Government Center for cocktails and light refreshments. The Clark County Government Center, also known as the Sandstone Building, was designed by C. W. Fentress, J. H. Bradburn and Associates. The building opened in June, 1995, and comprises 385,000 gross square feet. It is clad in red sandstone to match Red Rock Canyon, in view on the west side of the valley. The building is themed with Native American petroglyphs, copied directly from Red Rock and other areas in the surrounding hills.
Next jump a bus to Fremont Street Experience to view the new Haluk Akakce’s Sky is the Limit video art piece on the 90 feet high, four city blocks long canopy. It is spectacular. The show begins at 8:30pm.
Or, take the trolley directly to First Friday, the once a month cultural block party in the downtown arts district. Part street festival, part gallery walk, the event can draw up to 10,000 visitors nightly to the neighborhood that is official known as 18b. Each First Friday, the area comes to life as nine blocks are closed to accommodate artists’ tents, exhibitors, food vendors, street performers and a number of main stages presenting a variety of musical groups.
