Project: Cultural Equity Grant Program
Organization: San Francisco Arts Commission

San Francisco Arts Commission encourages diverse and nontraditional artistic expression through its Cultural Equity Grant Program. Started in 1993, Cultural Equity Grants nurture and celebrate San Francisco’s vast cultural traditions by giving operation, infrastructure, and programmatic support to individual artists and arts organizations in historically underserved communities.

Grants of up to $25,000, as well as three multiyear grants for $100,000, are given to organizations that add to the multicultural landscape of San Francisco. Among the grants recipients are women's and GLBT performance groups; minority, ethnically specific cultural centers; and artists with disabilities.

The Commission has dedicated a full-time director and two staff members to oversee the Cultural Equity Grants Program, and in December Director of the Commission Richard Newirth appointed E. San San Wong to the director position. Well regarded for developing initiatives that address the roles of artists in communities, as well as the impact of changing demographics on artistic quality, Ms. Wong has extensive experience working with cultural organizations in historically minority and newcomer communities. Richard Newirth will leave the San Francisco Arts Commission next month, but his legacy of supporting multicultural artists and arts organizations will live on, ensuring that all San Franciscans, regardless of circumstance, have access to the arts.
