In honor of National Arts and Humanities Month, Emerging Arts Leaders/Los Angeles (EAL/LA) will host "Creative Conversation 2009: Leveraging Networks", a symposium for arts professionals early in their careers or those new to the field. Description/Notes:

There is an increase in the interest of arts equity for local visual and performing artists, emerging artists, arts educators and many multidimensional crafts persons. The arts are in high demand in the business community, schools, churches and youth centers. The wealth of creativity is evidenced in the thirst for dialogues about arts being accessible to all populations. The Arts Council has greatly impacted the arts network through a technology development of a LOUISVILLE ARTSBOOK USA comprehensive real-time artist directory in cooperation with Gordon Communications and the University of Louisville College of Arts and Sciences. This project is the result of "Artist Creative Dialogues." The historical paradigm is consistently being challenged. The expansion of Louisville's "Great Creative Community" has tremendous economic potential.

The location of "Creative Conversation is at the Heyburn Building, Suite 1600, Louisville, KY 40202. Please come into the building from the Broadway side door entrance.

Event Title: Why the Arts are Critical in our Schools
Description/Notes:

The purpose of this Creative Conversation is to increase the awareness of supporting the arts in our schools as a tool for effective learning among K-12 students.

This will be achieved by presenting best practices of arts in learning initiatives currently integrated in WJCC and York school divisions, showcasing WHRO public broadcasting educational projects and experiencing exemplary arts in education programming.

Audience will leave Creative Conversation with an increased awareness of how arts are used as a catalyst for learning and knowledge of arts in education advocacy organizations.

The timeliness of this session is paramount given potential of cuts to arts in education programming with our current economic climate. Preserving arts in education programming is essential to our youth, schools and community. Research reveals:

  • Arts education impacts cognitive development
  • Students who participate in arts programs demonstrate improved academic performance and lower dropout rates
  • Arts education nurtures creative thinking skills necessary in today’s economic environment

This Creative Conversation’ target audience includes parents, educators, elected officials, school board and business community members.
